What is a Cross Country Skier’s Bible?

In order to make the Bible more accessible to different kinds of readers, Bible publishers often include essays and commentaries along with the Biblical text. This is actually a very ancient practice, where it was not uncommon to have much more commentary on each page than actual text of the Bible.

Today, Bible publishers have revived this ancient tradition by designing Bibles especially for different segments of the population. Although the Biblical text is always the same (though translations may vary) much of the book is taken up with essays, notes and commentaries. These essays, notes and commentaries are aimed at very specific audiences such as women, men, students, graduates, empty nesters, businessmen, entrepreneurs, church workers, politicians and athletes. (We’re not actually sure if there is a Cross Country Skier’s Bible yet.)

An important element of Bible reading is Bible Study. It is very helpful to read the Bible with a group of people working with a teacher or at least a book that is written by a Biblical scholar who can set the work in context for you and help you better understand what you are reading.

We strongly suggest buying a “Study Bible” which will contain helpful notes, charts, maps, etc. They come in all translations and are a wonderful way to enhance your Bible reading experience.
