The Bible has two main divisions. The first part is called the “Old Testament.” That is the Christian term for the ancient Hebrew Scriptures. The second, shorter part of the Bible is called “The New Testament.” These are stories, letters and sermons related to the life of Christ and the early Christian Community.
The Bible is made up of Books, Chapters and Verses.
Book is the generic title given to the different works in the Bible, although some of them are not books at all but letters, short sermons, poems, songs, etc.
Each book is divided into Chapters.
Each Chapter is divided into Verses.
For example, the Christmas story is found in Luke 2:1-20. That means it is found in the book of Luke, chapter 2, verses 1 through 20.
A lot of people forget that each Bible has a Table of Contents, so if you’re not sure where to find Luke, look it up in the Table of Contents. Once you get to Luke, you can usually look for keywords at the top of the page (like in a dictionary) to see which chapter you are in. The verse numbers are usually interspersed into the text itself.
