Several news organizations over the years have asked participants if America should leave “In God we
trust” on our currency. Each poll has found 85-90% of the people in favor of it. America is still a God
fearing nation.
Much has been made of the decline of the values of our nation. The reality is that unfortunately it is
true. Ideas and thoughts are what shape a person, a family and a nation. It was the godly ideas, values
and beliefs of the early settlers and the Founding Fathers that shaped this amazing nation that we call
home. The Bible shaped the thinking and the lives of many of those people. The ideas that God put in
His Book helped form the bedrock of our great civilization.
Today, unfortunately, our dynamic culture is threatened by ideas that lack godly values.
And the target of this onslaught is you. This deluge of bad ideas often comes wrapped in comedy, music,
and other forms of entertainment to make it more palatable. Yet the effect can be just as deadly to you
and our society. Eroding how you think about God and his values changes the way you act. And changing
the way you and I act changes our culture for the worse.
Read the Bible. It reinforces what you believe and it can change what you believe for the better. It helps
you live a more values based life. The Bible says we need to “renew our mind” because the world wants
to conform us to its image.(Romans 12.2) This is a daily struggle. This is a battle for how you think. God’s
Word will strengthen your thinking and help you to act accordingly. May I say that reading the Bible is
patriotic in that it helps us to preserve the quality of life that we have inherited from the Founders. They
read God’s word and look at the results.
It is going to take more than an affirmation about “In God we trust” on our money to fend off the
godless values attacking our society. Reading the Bible will help greatly.
