Trust Him With Your Need; He Will Heal You.

The key to the healing of the trauma you face is trusting that God is able to do just that. This is first and foremost, the starting gate and quite frankly, the finish line too. That is because once you grab hold of this in your heart, a process will begin that God promises he will successfully complete. (Philippians 1.6)

A friend of mine told his sister recently, who is struggling with thoughts of suicide, “When you are sick physically, you go to see a doctor. You are sick spiritually, you need to go see a pastor.” In the same way, God is the Great Physician who can heal you of the trauma of your emotional wound. The Bible states that God’s word is a medicine for your soul (Psalm 107.20).

When you go to a doctor because you are sick, the doctor prescribes medication sometimes to fight off the illness. You have a soul illness due to the trauma you have been through. God’s word will help make you well. You go to the doctor because you know that he or she has the training and expertise to help you. You trust your doctor that they know what they are doing and you take action based on what they say by doing what they tell you. You take the prescription to your pharmacist, you pay for it, and you go home and take it according to the directions listed on the label. In the same way, God created you. He knit you together in your mother’s womb. (Psalm 139.13) He can look within you and He knows what is hurting you and He knows what to prescribe that is the right antidote for your problem. If you follow His advice and care regimen, you will get better but like your doctor you have to trust Him.

I have purposely used the word “trust” instead of the word “faith” here. The word “faith” can seem so mysterious, remote and unattainable. The word though, simply means, “trust”. One time when my oldest son was about three years old, he liked to jump off our porch into my arms. He and I got the biggest kick out of it! One day, in the car he asked me, “Daddy, what is faith?” I said to him, “You know when you jump off the porch into my arms, you trust me to catch you. Well that is what faith is. The trust that I will catch you.” A light bulb went off within him because he instantly reached over the seat from the back (the car was parked) and he threw his arms around my neck and exclaimed, “Daddy, I faith you!”

Can you acknowledge before God that you want to trust Him for your healing? Ask Him to lead you on this path of healing and wholeness. Talk to Him. Prayer is simply talking to God. It does not have to be formalized in any way. If it helps you to use a formal prayer then choose one from your religious discipline. Or if you are having difficulty forming the words that express what you are feeling, choose one of David’s Psalms and personalize it by inserting yourself as the person speaking. David wrote the Psalms under great duress. Many of them are a cry for help. If you cannot find one on your own, I would recommend one of the following Psalms: Psalms 3, 4, 6, 7, 10, 13, 17, 18, 20, 23, or 25.

Trusting Him for your healing is a daily challenge. Fear causes us to want to take back the control of our lives. We think that this is the answer but it won’t work. Trusting Him is the answer. It will work. Take it one day at a time and you will be able to do it. Talk to Him about your need every day. If you falter today, try again tomorrow. Keep falling forward and eventually, I assure you, you will find him transforming you. (2 Timothy 2.13) He loves you so much, like a parent; He is more concerned and grieved about your emotional health than you are (I John 3.1).
